Obtaining a Wedding License in Maryland

  • You do not need to be a resident of Maryland.
  • Your license needs to be obtained from the Circuit Court Clerk’s office for the county where the ceremony is to take place.  If it is not convenient to appear in person you may apply using a Non-Resident Affidavit.  The form can be found here

  • Both parties must appear in person at the Clerk’s office during normal business hours and be prepared to provide, under oath, their full names, ages, residences and marital status. Bring your Driver’s License or State issued ID card and proof of the dissolution of any previous marriage, if applicable.
  • You must be 18 years old to legally consent to marriage unless:

An applicant who is 16 or 17 years old may obtain a license with parental consent OR a certificate from a licensed physician stating that subject to the doctor’s examination he/she has determined the female applicant to be pregnant or have given birth to a child

An applicant who is 15 years old may obtained a license with BOTH parental consent AND a physician’s certicate

Applicants under the age of 15 may not marry in Maryland

  • Timing: A license is not effective until 6 AM on the second calendar day after the license is issued.  It expires after 6 months.
  • A replacement can be obtained for a lost license
